Making It Work - A Manufacturer's Guide to Startup Partnerships

Ever wonder what goes through a manufacturer's mind when a startup walks through their door? This workshop flips the script, presenting the startup-manufacturer relationship from the manufacturer's perspective. Led by Lucy Minturn, co-founder of FosterWorks, this session provides invaluable insights into what makes manufacturers say yes—or run for the hills.

You'll learn the unvarnished truth about how manufacturers evaluate startup partnerships, including the red flags that immediately disqualify potential customers, what information manufacturers need to provide accurate quotes, and how small-scale production fits (or doesn't) into their business model. The workshop addresses critical topics including how to approach manufacturers effectively without wasting everyone's time, what information to prepare before your first conversation, common mistakes that kill deals before they start, and how to be a good customer when you're ordering small quantities.

About the Instructor

With 20 years of experience thinking about how to make things out of metal, Lucy Minturn is well-versed in everything from sourcing materials and manufacturing processes to surface treatment and finishing. Beginning a career in finance at Lehman Brothers then Morgan Stanley, deeply involved in emerging market equity IPOs, privatizations, and currencies, she left finance to pursue manufacturing at an architectural metal shop in Queens. She went on to spend a decade in high-end finishings for architects, designers, and artists—both as an owner and operator of various companies.

About the Organization

FosterWorks' mission is to retain secure manufacturing jobs in Chicago and sustain pathways to the middle class for area residents. They believe that a strong manufacturing base with opportunities for skill growth and advancement is a vital part of the urban fabric. FosterWorks seeks to cultivate and serve customers, employees, and the community and environment where they work.
